last night I turned for an evening appointment and told by the customer that he required blinds for his conservatory. On being shown the conservatory he then mentioned that it had just been built and there was no lighting in there would it cause a problem with measuring. Told him that I could measure but he would have to be responsible for mismeasures due to me not being able to see the tape or he could rebook either during daylight hours or when he'd had lighting installed

Way to go to get a sale phugly.
I bet the customer thought you were a right miserable git.
Mind you selling ghetto blinds all day leaves you like that, then you get a descent sale opportunity and blow it .

I carry a LED head torch for that very reason. Keeps the hands free for measuring. However, I did refuse to measure one conservatory. The floor had not been laid, and the customer expected me to walk along the joists, with a 5 foot drop into the founds.
I also carry a powerful hand torch in the car, to try and see the house numbers, when driving in the dark, but why don't people put numbers on the door or preferable in a place where it can be seen from the road/pavement, especially houses that have side doors. This is especially bad in new housing estates, no requirement in law to have numbers, and where potential customers have installed replacement doors.

I have thought for years that house numbering & house names should be clearly displayed & made compulsory. House names are nice but house numbers should always override them. P.S. If you use TOM-TOM etc. can you type in house names to find location?

House names should be registered with the PO PAF database if you want to use it. Entering a registered house name or number on the PAF database gives the aprox location when the "show map" option is used on multimap. Very handy for night appointments.
But I agree, it should be made a legal requirement, and there should be no excuse for new build houses.

I totally agree, it really gets me when you can't find a house in the dark, it amazes me how inconsiderate people can be not thinking of others. Change the law and hang em.
Opps... don't change the law till next week, I need to get down to B&Q and put a number on my house !!!!
