Hereticus, No way on this earth would I want the IT department to have any input on the forum. It is someone in IT that puts the odd Trojan attachment to your e mail every so often. Allegedly.

Hey, Red - don't jump so fast. I'm talking about using the IT Departments skills in developing a secure system - not controlling it, not carrying out the verification check themselves, not tapping in to it's workings - just having an advisory input into what is possible and what isn't.
Why buy a dog and then bark yourself - the expertise is there, why not use it ?
And Hi to Phugly on line at the moment, or should I say RH17PN.

Sorry Mike, Just the thought of IT and cookies sends shivers down my spine. Youre idea is sound up to the point of the cookie, The advisor can just log in with the code as his password and under his board name. I am sure that if someone else got hold of the code they could not log in under a different name as they would be spotted at the first log in.

Understand what you are saying Red - but if an advisor told somebody else (a competitor) his pseudonym and his six digit logon password, then that person could log on anytime from anywhere. By locking the logon code to a particular IP address via a cookie or some other device, we would ensure that the member identity can only log on from the same computer.
Remember that it would be the forum admin software that would send and monitor the cookie, not Hillarys.
Anyway, as I said, it is an idea that needs some thought and can no doubt be refined by those with more technical ability than me, so please continue to chew it over and post further thoughts.

I am pretty sure that this site does not have the capacity to generate a cookie of that nature. Or for that matter generate the passwords you are on about. Some sort of portal at the front end might well have but it all gets too complicated from then on. I really do think it is going to come down to manually checking and validating members if this site were to continue to be used. The only other option then would be a new site that offers these options but a fee is usually involved. And changing over sites is in my opinion, not the best idea as we would loose a lot of advisor's who are at ease posting on this board.

Whilst what Mike suggested may work for advisors, how would you identify staff? Do you need a second system running in parallel?
Could we make use of our Hillarys email address? I think mines agent.114059@hillarys.co.uk? anyone registering must provide their agency number and the authorization code be emailed to that address. Any email address not including "hillarys.co.uk" would be rejected, but staff and advisors would be covered by 1 system

Red, this site certainly does have the capability of planting cookies. As someone who cleans out cookies on a regular basis I find that I have to re-log in after doing so.
And Mike, the idea is good, but if the access code is tied to one IP address you can only access from one computer. I often log in from a different computer and, sad RHUBARB that I am, often look in when I,m abroad just to see whats appertaining.

Hi, Russell - or should I say US49MR - see how it works.
Anyway, glad I've prompted a few brain cells to start working and I do take all your comments on board - seems like the basic idea might have the germ of something in it, but that details need to be thought through.
As for Phugly and his obsession with our antics when he is sitting with his lap top by his pool in Spain - perhaps when logging in from another location there should be a secondary verification procedure that asks a couple of questions to confirm identity. I don't know what, but it probably only affects Phugly anyway - the rest of us are too busy / too poor to take holidays or, if we manage to get away, are only too pleased to leave the job behind for a week or two. Do you take SAM on holiday with you as well (bet you do, just to play Jawbreaker) ? Sorry, Pete - just winding you up !

Mottors. Just to let you know that I will be going to the forum. I put my foot down with a firm hand and said, wife, I am going to the forum. She said ok, in her own sweet way. The bones will mend but its the scars I am worried about. Any way, see you all there.
