Message for SAM users I have had very positive feedback regarding the "how to" items in the SAM weekly mailer. The screen shots and the notes are reported to be very useful. Whilst these items are included to some degree in the training session, it is obviously quite challenging to remember everything your shown. Therefore if you have any requests for similar articles covering SAM functionality please post here - or email me directly at kevin.beardsley@hillarys.co.uk Ideally post here - then we can all share and develop SAM skills...... Regards Kevin Hillarys ICT Dept SAM Development Hi Kevin Welcome! Any idea as to when the "Self-Generated Apps and orders" drop down on the front page will become operative? Quite frustrating currently, as old existing customers ring me and want blinds ordering, and I still have to do it the Paper way and fax the order!! "Yesterday "would be a good start date if you want a suggestion! Bear

Bear...it is operative and I have been using it for months.
Firstly, you need to download your customer database. This takes a few minutes so might cost you a few pence but more than worthwhile. Log into SAM, click on 'Setup' at the bottom of the screen, and then on 'Request Customer Data' - this will download full details of all customers in the Hillarys database who are in the postcodes covered by your diary. You can also repeat this periodically, say monthly, to add recent new customers.
To access a customer you then go into the 'Self Generated Appointments and Orders' option and enter whatever details you have to initiate a search for the customer information. Customer Number is quickest, full postcode is very efficient, but you can also enter road name plus part postcode (i.e first three or four characters) and it will usually find what you want. Then tap on the customer details, indicate whether you are booking an appointment or placing an order, and proceed from there.
The appointment will show in your diary at the next update, or you can see it immediately if you click on 'Tools' and then on 'Request latest information'.
Hopefully Kevin wil cover this more thoroughly in a future tip sheet, but this should get you underway.

Mike is absolutely correct with his advice - thanks Mike What you do need to know is how many customers you have. We limit the number sent in one tranche to 9000 at a time (due to PDA capacity). Some of you will have more than 9000, and will therefore need to come and fetch them twice (ie over 9000 up to 18000). There are even a few of you with more than that (ie you will need to request 3 times). If you call the ICT Helpdesk they can tell you how many you have - then its over to you. Doing it through your home PC and broadband is best - but the PDA is quite capable if your signal strength is reasonable Regards Kevin ICT SAM Development

Thanks for that Hereticus and Kevin, --downloading as we speak... How come I missed the launch of that??? Bet a few other SAM users will be downloading their database tonite as well!! Thanks again By the way I haven't bitten an FSM or anyone else recently, does this mean I have lost my touch? HELL NO! I have just adopted the "give peace a chance " atmosphere and I detect that things might be in danger of changing for the better. What will I do if everything gets perfect??? Now that would be a worry!!! Bear--Thanks again

I find the drip fead of infornation on SaM hard to follow.
I did not realise Customer Lists were available to all.
I am in a poor reception area for downloads therefore would find it easier to do this operation through broadband but would need comprehensive info. on how to do it.
Although SAM says I have Downlosded latest update I do not seem to have promotional prices.
Why Cant SAM do 3 for promotion
Cant renember seeing a CD with SAM for example.
Regarding TOM TOM which was a reason I got SAM exactly what do you need to source to make it work

Regarding TOM TOM which was a reason I got SAM exactly what do you need to source to make it work The notes that were sent to all SAM advisors to support the last software release Dec 05 (Version 3) covered Customer Data download and how to use it to book appointments and take instant orders. The "software release notes" are sent in a format to suit your Blue SAM handbook. I hope everyone keeps them up to date The box of "goodies" that everyone gets with their device has the disc "ActiveSync" so that SAM can be linked to the internet from your home PC and you can view and operate your device and SAM using your keyboard and mouse. Assuming you have broadband of course this makes all data transfer free SAM is currently being developed to cater for the multi-blind offers and will be available in the March/April release. I am re-issuing the Self Generated notes in the next weekly SAM mailer to ensure everyone gets the best from this facility. Regards Kevin ICT SAM Development

For anyone with a MAC, there is also software available. Check out www.markspace.com/, unfortunately it costs $40, but deliverable via internet. I use it to sync Apple's Calendar and Address Book with the PDA, and it can also transfer files between the two. Finally, if you connect to broadband with a wireless router, you can connect the PDA directly to the internet. Muuuuch cheaper that with Vodaphone charges.
