My latest bill was over £20, when it's usually about £12. I have discovered that if you request the latest information (SAM tools), you get charged about £2.50 for the info to download! Be warned!!!

No...I can't believe that !
I request 'latest information' through SAM Tools about four times every day and the cost is about two pence. My Vodafone bill for SAM has never exceeded £ 12.00 and I've had it now for about six months.
If you are being charged £ 2.50 I suggest you take the matter up immediately with Hillarys / Vodafone because clearly there is a charging problem on your account.

Would it be the cost of downloading the SAM update, do you think? I had to do that several times before I got it right?
Bill says 2895 KB £2.82

The 2895kb at £ 2.82 sounds like your total usage for the month, not for a single download, and basically its 1p per kilobyte.
For comparison, my total bill for September was £ 6.95 standing charge plus £ 1.08 data usage (1088kb over 66 sessions) plus VAT = £ 9.44. The single most expensive session was 97kb = 9.5p, which was for downloading the SAM update.
Not bad really - I would have spent nearly that in postage and the little extra is more than compensated by the benefits of SAM

SAM really is the best thing since sliced bread in our business !
Go back over your own figures and see how much better your discounts are for a start !
I used to 'round' prices down for customers - imagine how much that would be worth over a year ?

the concept of sam may be the best thing since sliced bread, but the unit is not, i like to bet that within 12 months this unit will have to be replaced and how much will that cost us?

cost will depend if they do have an updated handset. I had a free upgrade as the old one kept going wrong. I asked for a replacement and they sent out the latest handset free !

For what its worth I queried the same amount of £2.85 at 2am in the morning. After contacting IT they said it was for the latest download. Also had a couple of higher than expected costs but it appears that if you are in a poor recption area and keep trying to download it keeps costing you money so in future will ensure a good reception MM
