HI All,
INSTALLING tom tom sat nav, do I just need software installed on SAM device for it to work thru GPRS or should it be GPS ie a separate GPS blue tooth device put in car as well as PDA.
Was hoping it would work straight from SAM device but it looks like it will not SAM is GPRS not GPS, can anyone shed any light on this, bloody confusing.
Also heard that we could get tom tom thru vodafone £99 or am I thinking of something else?
Got hold of tom tom 5 software for £4 from e-bay.
Cheers Glen

Hi Glen, you will need a seperate GPS reciever. I have not been able to find a bluetooth one for the SAM, but you can get a wired one from www.pdamods.com

We're all here to help each other out, post helpful suggestions, pass on tips, have a moan occasionally, and generally feel that we're not on our own in the big wide world of blindfitters!! lol
Check out the questions being asked, and respond to them if you can....
There are about 800 advisors, and we want them ALL to come and contribute... so please pass the website on to all in your area. ;D ;D ;D

Of the 2 sites listed, 1 is wired (wire running between pda and gps unit) the other is bluetooth connected. For the pdamods wired unit, I think you need a mount with speaker and possibly a larger SD card. I think some people swap the sat nav and SAM sd cards over as the go to and from calls, others have copied the SAM card and the sat nav card on to a single larger card. I was about to purchase, but had problems with van so don't have the money spare any more. Suggest you phone both companies, I've found pdamods helpful in the past. Also, look under SAM heading and there's 2 pages of posting about Tom Tom which may help - or just click on hillarysblinds.proboards55.com/index.cgi?board=softwareapplications&action=display&thread=1125337142

Cheers At the present moment in time, due to the turmoil Hillary's are in I do not think it wise to invest in Tom Tom yet. Just do what I do if you are not sure where the address is. Go to www.multimap.com and input the postcode and a map will pop up. Its pretty precise and Its free. Red

I use multimap, red, and it's usually pretty good. But today I had a lead - such and such farm Clanfield. Checked multimap, yep can see exactly where it is. After 15 minutes driving around farmyard tracks and lanes, I eventually found someone who told me I should be the other side of the main road! I don't have sat nav, but am planning to buy it. The main advantage I see in it, is spoken directions when it's dark and raining. Driving around the largest council estate in England at night, trying to work out which turning to take, whilst dodging cars, kids and dogs in the rain, with many of the road names either missing or obscured by cars dumped on pavements. I too have concerns about income, but it's only £200 which equates to £1360 worth of blinds, and I've sold more than that today. I think it's one of those things you either like or think is a waste of money - bit like SAM. I like SAM, others hate it

You are probably among the few lucky advisor's that are earning a reasonable income now. And I am full time but cant hold out much longer. Red

Hi Swan
Sat nav doesn’t have to cost that much, you can buy a pda cradle with built in GPS Anything from £50 upward, and as for tom tom software, I got tom tom 5 with speed camera and 6-digit postcode for £9 from e-bay, and it works fine, but you would be better off with a new SD card 512 would be enough, just look around on the web, For prices to suit your budget, I reckon you could be up and running for about £100.

Hi, Follow this link for a good holder + charger + speaker + gps all in one just plug it in tab lighter and of you go got tom tom 5 for £4 of e-bay and 512MB SD card from local shop for £30. www.handtec.co.uk/product.php?xProd=144&xSec=1&jssCart=79869828f3626bb01219350f8aa3fb01The only thing I dislike is having to type post code in via small keyboard on SAM but other than that it works great, do not really use it for my appointments though because my area is quite small and I know it well.. Any more info you need please ask. ;D Glen
